I. Opening Thesis: The Industry Is Not Broken—It Is Being Rebuilt
The film industry is not collapsing. It is re-platforming.
That distinction matters. When industries move from one dominant platform to another, the transition rarely looks elegant. It feels chaotic. Uncertain. Disorienting. But history shows us that disruption is not synonymous with decline—it is often the precondition for reinvention.
The same forces that disrupted music, news, and retail are now fully operational in film: direct-to-consumer distribution, audience fragmentation, algorithmic discovery, and dramatically lower barriers to entry (Deloitte, 2024; PwC, 2024). What has changed is not storytelling itself, but how stories are financed, discovered, distributed, and monetized.
Independent filmmakers waiting for a return to “normal” are likely to miss the window altogether. The economics that once supported predictable theatrical runs, reliable minimum guarantees, and mid-budget certainty are no longer the default.
